Data is the New Oil: Why Every Business Needs Data Professionals

March 14, 2026 | By IATEC Expert Panel

Data is the New Oil

In 2006, mathematician Clive Humby famously declared, “Data is the new oil.” It was a bold statement then, but today, it is an undeniable reality. Every time a customer clicks a link, a delivery truck updates its GPS, or a factory machine completes a cycle, data is generated.

However, Humby’s quote had a crucial second half that is often forgotten: “Like oil, data is valuable, but if unrefined, it cannot really be used.”

Raw numbers sitting in a server do not generate revenue. To turn data into a competitive advantage, businesses need specialists who can extract it, clean it, analyze it, and predict future trends. This is why data professionals are currently among the most sought-after and highest-paid individuals in the corporate world.

The Three Pillars of the Data Economy

The term “Big Data” is broad, which can make it confusing for professionals looking to enter the field. The industry relies on an ecosystem of three distinct roles, each requiring its own specialized skill set:

1. The Builder: Data Engineering
Before data can be analyzed, it must be collected and stored securely. Data Engineers are the architects of the data world. They build the scalable pipelines and cloud databases (like AWS or Azure) that transport raw data from various sources into a centralized warehouse. Without solid data engineering, the rest of the data team cannot function.

2. The Interpreter: Data Analytics
Once the infrastructure is built, Data Analysts step in to make sense of the historical numbers. They are the bridge between the IT department and the boardroom. Using tools like SQL, Excel, and data visualization software (like Tableau or Power BI), analysts turn complex datasets into clear, actionable dashboards. They answer the question: “What happened, and why?”

3. The Predictor: Data Science
While analysts look at the past and present, Data Scientists look to the future. They use advanced statistics, Python programming, and machine learning algorithms to build predictive models. Whether it is a streaming service recommending your next movie, or a bank detecting a fraudulent transaction in real-time, Data Science answers the question: “What will happen next?”

The End of “Gut-Feeling” Leadership

Why is the demand for these roles skyrocketing? Because modern business has fundamentally changed. Ten years ago, executives could make decisions based on industry experience and “gut feeling.” Today, launching a product or optimizing a supply chain without consulting the data is a recipe for disaster.

Companies that leverage data-driven decision-making operate more efficiently, understand their customers better, and consistently outperform their competitors. From retail and finance to healthcare and logistics, every single industry is now a data industry.

Your Pathway to a High-Growth Career

The shortage of qualified data professionals is a global challenge. Universities are struggling to produce graduates with the exact mix of technical coding skills and business acumen that employers require.

Earning a targeted, industry-aligned certification proves that you have hands-on experience with the tools companies are using right now. It is the fastest route to transitioning into the lucrative world of data.
